THE 9th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF ISLAMIC STUDIES (ICONIS) 2025
AND CALL FOR PAPERS

ICONIS 2025 brings together scholars, researchers, practitioners, and students from across the globe to exchange insights, research findings, and experiences related to the interdisciplinary intersections between Islam, Culture, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), especially in addressing change and sustainability in today’s disruptive era.

The theme of this year's conference is
"Islam, Culture, and STEM: Change and Sustainability in Disruptive Era"

Descriptions

In an age marked by rapid technological advancement and global transformation, the integration of Islamic values, cultural identity, and STEM disciplines becomes pivotal in navigating sustainable solutions for future civilisations. This year’s ICONIS explores how Islamic perspectives and cultural wisdom intersect with STEM innovations to respond to ecological, economic, educational, and ethical challenges across the Muslim world and beyond.

Participants are cordially invited to contribute conceptual, theoretical, empirical, and applied research that reflects original and unpublished work related to the conference theme. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to).

- Culturally Responsive STEM Education in Islamic Contexts

Culturally responsive STEM education in Islamic contexts involves several key dimensions: (1) culturally responsive STEM pedagogy grounded in Islamic values, (2) integration of indigenous and local knowledge in science education from Muslim communities, (3) STEM and cultural identity among underrepresented Muslim populations, (4) ethnomathematics and ethnoscience in Islamic traditions, and (5) community-based STEM innovation in Muslim societies. These elements emphasize the importance of connecting STEM learning with cultural, historical, and spiritual experiences of Muslim learners, thereby enhancing relevance, engagement, and identity formation.

- Islamic Perspectives on STEM Curriculum and Policy

From the curriculum and policy perspective, several priorities must be addressed: (1) policy and curriculum design for contextualized STEM learning in Islamic education systems, (2) integration of Islamic worldview in science and faith-based curriculum development, (3) the role of Islamic religious education in promoting STEM literacy, and (4) contributions of Islamic scholars to science education and curriculum historically and in contemporary times. These components advocate for curriculum frameworks that are not only academically rigorous but also reflective of Islamic epistemologies and values.

- Islam, Science, and Ethics

At the intersection of science, faith, and morality, Islamic perspectives offer meaningful insights: (1) ethical frameworks in STEM grounded in Islamic jurisprudence and theology, (2) historical and contemporary contributions of Muslim scholars to scientific thought, and (3) navigating tensions and harmonies between scientific inquiry and Islamic belief. These considerations underline the significance of a science education that is not only technologically and empirically sound but also morally grounded and theologically coherent.
